Review of 347 ECG Contracts Saves Ghana $300 Million — Energy Minister

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed that the government’s review of 347 legacy contracts within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has resulted in the termination of 202 contracts, saving the nation approximately US$300 million.

Mr. Jinapor made the disclosure during an official working visit to the ECG headquarters, where he commended the company’s management, led by Ing. Julius Kpekpena, for significant progress in procurement, maintenance, revenue mobilisation, and strategic reforms.

Describing ECG as the “heartbeat of Ghana’s energy value chain,” the Minister said his visit formed part of his supervisory responsibilities over agencies under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition. The engagement, he noted, aimed to assess operational challenges, interact with staff, and reaffirm government’s commitment to supporting the company’s ongoing transformation.

Mr. Jinapor also issued a strong warning against corruption and misconduct within the utility provider, stressing that any employee found engaging in malfeasance — including unauthorised sale of meters or diversion of revenue — would face strict accountability measures.

“As Minister, I will not tolerate conduct that undermines national infrastructure or robs the Ghanaian people. There will be no shielding, no special treatment, and no exceptions,” he cautioned.

He emphasised that the government remains determined to fix inherited challenges in the power sector while implementing bold reforms to ensure long-term stability and sustainability.

“This government is not only fixing what it inherited but also making bold corrections to secure lasting stability in the energy sector,” he stated.

Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed his full support for ECG’s leadership and encouraged staff to remain committed to integrity, efficiency, and transparency in delivering on their national mandate.

“I pledged my full support to ECG and urged the staff to stay focused and committed to delivering on their mandate with integrity,” he wrote in a Facebook post after the visit.
