OSP Refutes Claims of Blocking Ofori-Atta’s Extradition

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has denied allegations that it is obstructing efforts by the Attorney-General to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to face criminal charges.

In a statement, the OSP described the claims as “false and misleading,” insisting that it continues to fully cooperate with the Attorney-General’s office and international law enforcement agencies in the ongoing extradition process.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was placed on a wanted list and an Interpol Red Notice was issued earlier this year over alleged involvement in multiple corruption-related cases under investigation by the OSP.

He was identified as a suspect in January 2025 in connection with alleged irregularities involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts, expenditures related to the National Cathedral project, and financial mismanagement in health and tax refund operations.

After repeatedly failing to honour summonses, the former minister was declared a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025. His lawyers later appealed for his removal from the wanted list, assuring that he would return voluntarily — a promise he did not fulfil.

In June 2025, following his continued absence, the OSP reinstated his fugitive status and confirmed that it had initiated extradition steps, including coordination with Interpol.

Nearly 10 months later, Mr. Ofori-Atta remains at large, with reports suggesting he is residing in the United States. Recent claims alleging that the OSP has refused to assist the Attorney-General in securing his extradition have since been dismissed by the Office.

According to sources close to the OSP, the extradition matter “remains active and is receiving the necessary attention” in collaboration with relevant international partners.
