The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a strong warning to the public and heads of tertiary institutions against engaging with 50 foreign universities that are not recognised or accredited to operate in Ghana.
In a statement signed by the Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC explained that these institutions have failed to meet the required accreditation and quality assurance standards, and therefore cannot award qualifications that are valid in Ghana.
“We hope you treat this caution with the seriousness that it deserves in your dealings with them,” the statement read.

The move forms part of GTEC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on fake degrees and unaccredited academic institutions, following recent directives warning individuals—especially those in political and academic circles—to stop using the title “Dr.” unless their qualifications are from accredited and recognised universities.
GTEC further urged the public to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in programmes or using certificates obtained from them for employment or further studies.
