Police Arrest Man for Using Ambulance to Traffic Cannabis

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda for allegedly using a private ambulance to transport large quantities of cannabis.

The arrest took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after weeks of surveillance. Police intercepted a Hyundai Hiace ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 in front of Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami. A search of the vehicle uncovered several sacks filled with dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.

According to a police statement, officers recovered 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected narcotics. Investigations revealed that the consignment had been loaded in Kpando, Volta North Region, and transported to Accra for distribution. Tuanda reportedly admitted that he had been involved in the trade since 2024.

Further checks showed that the suspect had purchased the vehicle as a regular car before illegally modifying it with a siren and ambulance branding. Prior to acquiring the Hyundai Hiace, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar activities. Police also indicated that he occasionally used the ambulance to transport dead bodies alongside narcotics.

The vehicle has been impounded, while the seized substances have been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. The suspect is currently being processed for court as investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against using legitimate service vehicles for criminal activities and assured that it remains resolute in the fight against drug trafficking.
