Bawumia to Delegates: I Am NPP’s Quickest Path Back to Jubilee House

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party delegates to retain him as flagbearer for the 2028 elections, arguing that he represents the party’s fastest route back to power.

Addressing delegates at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, September 10, Dr. Bawumia said Ghana’s electoral history shows that consistency in presenting a candidate eventually pays off. He noted that since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1993, every outgoing president has handed over power to a candidate they had previously contested against.

He cited examples to support his case: former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who lost in 1996 but won in 2000; the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who contested in 2000 and 2004 before winning in 2008; and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who lost in 2008 and 2012 before securing victory in 2016. He also pointed to John Mahama, who lost in 2016 and 2020 but reclaimed power in 2024.

“The trend shows that maintaining faith with a candidate yields results. No first-timer has ever won Ghana’s presidential elections. I am the most marketed, prepared, and unifying candidate for the NPP. No Ghanaian can say they have not heard of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he stressed.

Dr. Bawumia further argued that with President Mahama expected to leave office in 2029, the historical pattern indicates that he is best positioned to take over if the NPP contests with a united front.

He therefore appealed to delegates to endorse him in the party’s upcoming flagbearer contest on January 31, 2026.

The former Vice President is currently on a three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, meeting Constituency Executives as part of efforts to formally announce his intention to engage delegates at the polling station level ahead of the national campaign.
