Madina Redco Slum Structures Demolished Over Security Risks

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has pulled down all makeshift structures and shops recently rebuilt at the Madina Redco slum.

The demolition, carried out on Friday, September 12, follows the Assembly’s earlier declaration of the area as a security zone due to repeated fire outbreaks, the latest occurring on August 3, 2025. Authorities had warned that anyone who flouted the directive would face arrest and prosecution. Three individuals were arrested during the exercise for resisting law enforcement officers.

Some affected traders expressed anger and disappointment, accusing the Assembly of treating them unfairly. “We got here at dawn and realised the military and police had taken over the place, demolishing the structures. We even pleaded with them to allow us to take our stock, but they refused.

I have lost millions of cedis,” one trader told Citi News. Another, Emmanuel Kumi, added: “This is so unfair. We also voted for the government. Not everyone here was involved in selling contraband goods.”

Meanwhile, some residents welcomed the move, arguing that the slum had become a hotspot for unlawful activities. “They failed to obey the Assembly’s order not to rebuild. The businesses there were leading the youth astray. I’m happy if the land will now be put to proper use,” one resident said.
