The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has assured that all 300 permanent staff of AirtelTigo (AT) will keep their jobs as government moves to restructure the company alongside Telecel Ghana.
The restructuring, described by the Ministry as a necessary intervention, seeks to address AT Ghana’s severe financial challenges and create a stronger competitor in the telecom sector.
Addressing a press briefing on Friday, September 5, Mr. George stressed government’s commitment to safeguarding workers during the process.
“The government will ensure that the approximately 300 permanent staff of AT retain their employment. I repeat, they will retain their employment. There will be no job losses,” he stated.

He added that the transaction advisor has also been tasked to review the situation of over 200 contract staff to determine measures for their future. The Minister expressed appreciation to AT workers for their patience and professionalism, assuring them that the government is mindful of the impact on their families and livelihoods.
On the nature of the intervention, Mr. George clarified widespread reports of a takeover, insisting that the process is neither a merger nor an acquisition.
“This is a force majeure situation. The transaction advisor’s report will set out a clear path for government consideration. For emphasis, what is happening is not a merger, and neither is it an acquisition,” he explained.
He called on stakeholders — including subscribers, tower companies, suppliers, and creditors — to await the advisor’s recommendations, which will provide clarity on debts, services, and the company’s future.
