Kintampo North MCE Leads Galamsey Crackdown on Black Volta; Four Arrested

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kintampo North, in collaboration with a joint military-police task force, has arrested four individuals engaged in illegal mining activities on the Black Volta River. The intelligence-led operation, carried out on Wednesday, forms part of efforts to curb the growing pollution of the river caused by galamsey operations.

Speaking after the raid, the MCE explained that the action followed intelligence reports about the presence of illegal miners within the municipality’s jurisdiction.

“It has come to our attention that a group of galamseyers is operating here, and they are seriously polluting the Black Volta,” he said.

He reaffirmed the assembly’s determination to make illegal mining unprofitable and unsustainable within Kintampo North.

“We are making sure that galamsey within the municipality becomes a lion’s den for these operators. We are leaving no stone unturned,” he stressed.

During the operation, the task force seized a large quantity of mining equipment, with more machinery reportedly located further along the river. The MCE vowed that all confiscated equipment would be destroyed to deter future illegal activities.

The Black Volta, one of Ghana’s most critical water bodies, continues to face severe environmental threats from illegal mining.

The four suspects arrested are currently in police custody and will soon be arraigned before court.
