The Ashanti Regional office of National Security has intercepted and destroyed a large consignment of counterfeit baby diapers smuggled into Ghana from Nigeria and falsely branded with the name of a local company.
The products were seized three weeks ago at the Asafo Interchange in Kumasi while being offloaded from a truck that had been trailed from Accra. According to a National Security report, the port duty documents covering the goods were forged.
Subsequent laboratory tests by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) confirmed the diapers were fake and unsafe for use. Acting on the FDA’s advice, National Security transferred the seized items to Zoomlion’s Medical Waste Treatment Plant, where they were scientifically destroyed on August 20, 2025.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, told reporters that officers intercepted the consignment after first purchasing a sample pack for inspection before demanding documentation. “Customs later confirmed the documents were fake, leading to the seizure,” he explained.
He revealed that while several individuals have since called to claim ownership of the products, none have appeared in person to follow up. “A caller has repeatedly contacted our office, promising to come for negotiations, but never shows up. That has been a major challenge,” he said.
Investigations have traced the source of the counterfeit goods to Nigeria. Security officials suspect the operation is led by Nigerian nationals with local collaborators in Kumasi.
“Reliable intelligence confirms the ringleaders are Nigerian nationals, and we are working hard to apprehend them,” Alhaji Tapsoba assured.
