Heightened Security at Akwatia as NDC Holds Primary Ahead of By-Election

A strong police presence has been deployed at GCD Walker Park in Akwatia today, Monday, August 4, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) conducts its parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election scheduled for September 2 in the Eastern Region’s Akwatia constituency.

Security personnel have been strategically stationed across the venue and surrounding areas to maintain order and ensure a peaceful voting process. Delegates of the party are casting their ballots to choose among three aspirants vying to represent the NDC in the crucial by-election.

The contenders are: former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye Yiadom, former Presiding Member of the Akwatia Municipal Assembly Erasmus Ali Korney, and Bernard Bediako Baidoo, another committed member of the party. While the atmosphere remains calm, there is a palpable sense of anticipation as supporters gather in large numbers awaiting the results.

Speaking to the press at the venue, Eastern Regional NDC Chairman, Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, expressed unwavering confidence in the party's prospects. “The NDC is united and fully prepared for this by-election. We are confident that whoever wins today’s primary will go on to reclaim the Akwatia seat for the NDC on September 2. Akwatia is ready for change,” he stated.

The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi. Prior to his passing, the NDC had been challenging his 2024 parliamentary victory in court, citing alleged electoral irregularities.

The declaration of the seat as vacant has reignited political activity in the constituency, with both the NDC and NPP gearing up for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
