Government Revokes Licences of Four Trawlers for Repeated Fishing Violations

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has announced the revocation of fishing licences for four industrial trawlers found to have repeatedly breached Ghana’s fisheries regulations.

Addressing the public during the Government’s Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 6, the Minister said the move is part of a broader effort to encourage sustainable and responsible fishing practices across the country’s aquaculture sector.

“We have suspended the licences of four trawlers for multiple regulatory violations. Just yesterday and today, the Fishing Enforcement Unit (FEU), led by the Navy, has implemented enforcement actions at some of our key fishing ports,” she stated.

Madam Arthur also revealed that the FEU had arrested individuals involved in the illegal sale of premix fuel earlier that morning.

She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s marine resources and supporting artisanal fishing communities through tougher enforcement of existing laws.

“As part of our manifesto commitment, Cabinet has approved the creation of an inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral technical team to develop a comprehensive national blue economy strategy for Ghana,” the Minister added.
