10 Arrested, 9 Firearms Seized in Police Operations Ahead of Akwatia By-Election

Police in the Eastern South Region have arrested 10 suspects and confiscated nine firearms in a series of security operations in Akwatia, as part of measures to curb illegal arms possession ahead of the upcoming parliamentary by-election.

According to the Police Command, the seized weapons include eight pump-action shotguns and one locally manufactured single-barrel gun. The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to prevent the use of unauthorized firearms in election-related activities.

On August 22, officers intercepted a vehicle near St. Dominic Hospital, driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu. A search revealed a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four AAA live cartridges, and two FTB blank cartridges. Although Ofosu presented a valid firearm licence, he was arrested to assist investigations while the weapon and ammunition were retained for verification.

That same day, police arrested Joshua Amenuku at the Akwatia Y-Junction snap checkpoint after he was found with 15 live BB cartridges. A subsequent search of his home uncovered an ADLER TULPA pump-action gun and five more cartridges.

Later, at the Boadua Livingstone checkpoint, two men — Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national Lu Youyan — were arrested after officers retrieved four live BB cartridges from their Toyota Hilux. Preliminary investigations suggest the ammunition belonged to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who also owns the vehicle. Police say efforts are underway to locate and question him.

On August 23, officers at the same checkpoint arrested Pieterson Joseph after finding an ADLER TULPAR pump-action gun along with 46 AAA and BB cartridges in his car. He admitted ownership of the weapon.

That evening, police at the Staff Village Boadua checkpoint stopped a Toyota Tundra with registration WR 5535-13. A search uncovered three pump-action guns — a Pardus, a Hulglu Atroe, and another make. The driver, Stephen Nkansah, claimed two belonged to him while the third was for his chief. He was arrested and remains in custody.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured the public that it will continue to enforce strict security measures before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election to maintain law and order.
