Minority and NPP Stage Protest at EOCO Over Hanan's Continued Detention

Members of the Minority in Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are set to stage a protest march today, Monday, July 7, 2025, to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in opposition to what they describe as the unjust and punitive detention of Abdul-Wahab Hanan, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO).

The protest follows EOCO's continued detention of Hanan, despite reports that he has fulfilled all bail conditions imposed after his arrest in connection with alleged financial crimes.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Newsroom on Sunday, NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha criticized EOCO for violating due process, urging the agency to either formally charge Hanan in court or release him.

“If Hanan has committed an offence, let him face trial in court. Otherwise, release him,” Mustapha asserted. He confirmed that NPP MPs, party officials, and sympathizers would join the protest to demand answers from EOCO over Hanan’s prolonged custody.

He further accused EOCO officials of ignoring attempts to communicate with them after Hanan’s legal team met all bail requirements. “We called EOCO officials, including Raymond Archer and his deputies, to finalize the process, but none of them answered. This silence suggests that Hanan is being punished without justification,” he added.

Abdul-Wahab Hanan was arrested on June 25, alongside his wife, as part of EOCO’s investigation into suspected economic crimes at NAFCO. While his wife has been released on GH¢30 million bail, Hanan remains in custody, reportedly yet to satisfy the full terms of his GH¢60 million bail. A third individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was also detained during the simultaneous arrests in Accra and Tamale.
