Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has died following a brief illness that had kept him away from parliamentary duties in recent days. His passing has sent shockwaves through both Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Kumi, who was serving his first term as an MP on the NPP ticket, had recently been involved in a widely publicized legal dispute concerning the legitimacy of his election.

His death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned a contempt ruling against him, which stemmed from the contentious 2024 parliamentary election results.
Back in February 2025, the Koforidua High Court had found Kumi in contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from participating in the swearing-in ceremony as an MP. A bench warrant had also been issued for his arrest after he failed to appear before the court and was deemed to have shown disregard for judicial orders.
