NPP Elders Plan Apology Visit to Mahama Over Wontumi – Dr. Ayew Afriyie Reveals

Some Elder and Senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are reportedly planning a courtesy visit to former President John Dramani Mahama to apologize on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

This was disclosed by Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, during an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 10.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial misconduct, including fraud and money laundering.

Dr. Afriyie hinted that the legal proceedings may be politically motivated, suggesting that the actions go beyond EOCO and national security institutions. “The forces behind this are more powerful than EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I believe this points directly to President Mahama,” he stated.

Acknowledging that Wontumi’s conduct ahead of the 2024 elections may have crossed the line, Dr. Afriyie referred to viral videos in which Wontumi launched personal attacks. He emphasized that while political competition is expected, it should not involve personal insults or misinformation.

“Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” Dr Afriyie explained.

He urged the NPP to respond with humility, revealing that Wontumi is prepared to apologize as part of efforts to ease tensions. “Rivalry in politics is natural, but it should be free from fabrications and personal abuse,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail by EOCO on June 2 after meeting the required conditions. His legal team had previously filed a motion on May 30 to review the GH¢50 million bail bond set by the High Court in Accra but withdrew the application on June 2, just a day before the scheduled hearing.
