A late-night fire has destroyed several shops at Tazani Lane in Kantamanto, near Ecobank in Accra, in the early hours of Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the distress call was received at approximately 1:31 a.m., prompting a swift response from multiple fire stations across the capital. The first fire engine arrived at 1:42 a.m., and firefighters battled the inferno for more than three hours before successfully bringing it under control at around 4:49 a.m.
In a statement, the GNFS described the operation as an “intensive firefighting effort”, crediting the coordinated work of its teams for preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.

The Acting Chief Fire Officer, along with the Director of Operations and the Greater Accra Regional Commander, visited the scene to assess the extent of the destruction and oversee ongoing recovery measures.
While no casualties have been reported, officials say property losses are substantial due to the highly commercial nature of the area. The GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
Kantamanto—one of Accra’s busiest trading hubs—has suffered several major fire incidents over the years, often leaving traders counting heavy losses worth millions of cedis.
Further updates are expected once the GNFS concludes its assessment.
