New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says he is optimistic that the party can reclaim power in the 2028 general elections if it strengthens internal unity and mobilises its supporters to turn out in large numbers.
Speaking at the launch of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15, Dr. Bawumia attributed the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat not to the strength of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) but to low voter turnout among NPP members.
“I am confident that, by the grace of God, if we resolve our internal issues and go out to vote, we will win the next election,” he assured.
Citing election data, Dr. Bawumia revealed that more than 2.1 million people who voted for the NPP in 2020 did not vote in 2024, a shortfall that proved decisive in the final outcome.

“The NPP’s votes went down. About 2.1 million people who voted for us in 2020 did not vote in 2024. These were NPP members — we simply didn’t vote,” he explained.
He further noted that former President John Dramani Mahama won the 2024 election by a margin of 1.7 million votes, which was fewer than the number of NPP supporters who stayed away from the polls.
“If our 2.1 million members had voted, we would have won. That is why I say it wasn’t the NDC that won the election — it was the NPP that lost it,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The Vice President urged party members to remain united and focused ahead of 2028, stressing that discipline, organisation, and voter mobilisation would be key to returning the NPP to power.
