A tragic incident at Twifo-Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District has claimed three lives after a group of young men became trapped in an abandoned mining pit. Four others were rescued.
According to local reports, the victims had secretly entered the site, which has remained inactive for nearly five years following the closure of a Chinese mining company’s operations.
District Chief Executive (DCE) Isaac Yawson confirmed the incident to Adom News, noting that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Twifo Praso morgue for autopsy and further investigation. The victims are believed to be natives of Mampong, though their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.

Mr. Yawson disclosed that the tragedy struck on a Wednesday—a day traditionally regarded in the area as a no-go day for farming and mining. Preliminary findings suggest that many youths in the community engage in illegal mining activities at night.
“The chief has assured me that anyone caught engaging in such activities at night will be arrested,” the DCE warned.
