Korle-Bu proposes GH¢5 levy to support Children’s ICU operations

The management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has proposed raising its current patient levy from GH¢2 to GH¢5 to help sustain services at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Children’s Ward.

According to hospital authorities, about 64 percent of children admitted to the ICU are unable to pay their medical bills, as services rendered at the unit are not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, disclosed this when the Health Committee of Parliament visited the facility on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

“We’re making a case to engage the NHIS. We’re also proposing that we increase the levy from GH¢2 to GH¢5 for patients who come here. It’s just a small levy, but it will go a long way,” he said.

Hospital management explained that the financial burden has left many bills unsettled, with the social welfare unit often stepping in to assist families.

“Sixty-four percent of the bill is outstanding. The social welfare unit supports them, because you cannot keep them here indefinitely; otherwise, you will have to feed them. Currently, there’s no NHIS support,” officials added.
