Kenyan Gardener Retires After 34 Years at German Embassy, Chooses Chickens Over Luxury Cars

A retiring Kenyan gardener has surprised many by turning down luxury cars for chickens.

Hesbon Imbwaka, who worked for 34 years at the German Embassy in Nairobi, was celebrated by German Ambassador Sebastian Groth earlier in August. Groth had jokingly pledged to gift him a Mercedes and a BMW in recognition of his long service, sparking excitement and lighthearted speculation online. Many Kenyans hailed Imbwaka’s dedication, with some even suggesting he should be rewarded with a trip to Germany.

Social media was awash with tributes. Crystal Gardens Landscape & Gardening Services described him as “a knowledgeable plantsman” behind the embassy’s immaculate gardens. Others praised his loyalty, with one X user calling his career longevity “a unicorn in today’s world.”

However, in a follow-up post on August 29, Ambassador Groth revealed that Imbwaka had politely declined the flashy promise of German “machines” and instead requested chickens to begin a poultry farm.

“Today was his last day. I wanted to hand him over the 68 German machine,” Groth wrote, referencing one Mercedes and one BMW for every year of service. “He opted for some kuku instead… That’s the real Luhya spirit.”

Photos shared online showed Groth and Imbwaka with several chickens, a feeder, and 50 kg of layers mash. The gesture drew admiration and amusement across social media. Some users joked about missed luxury cars, while many applauded the practical choice and the embassy’s recognition of a devoted worker.

“Congratulations but still #BenzForHesbon,” one user teased. Another quipped, “Mluhya sio binadamu” (“a Luhya is not a human being”), highlighting cultural pride and humor.

Others called for additional support to make his poultry venture a success, with suggestions of a chicken house and training.

Messages of gratitude also poured in. “That’s being human, thanks a lot on his behalf,” wrote one user, while another added: “Thank you for appreciating the man and gifting him in retirement.”

The story has since evolved into both a lighthearted viral moment and a reminder of the value of simple, practical gifts over extravagance.
