The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has formally apologised to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh over remarks made in the wake of a recent incident at the Greater Accra Regional (Ridge) Hospital. The meeting also explored ways to strengthen collaboration between the Association and government.
The apology followed a viral video showing relatives of a patient assaulting medical staff at the hospital’s emergency unit, which reignited calls for improved security in health facilities.
Tensions escalated when GRNMA General Secretary, Dr. Tenkorang-Twum, suggested that the minister’s background as a farmer made him unfit to understand hospital operations. The comments drew widespread backlash, with the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) condemning the statement as disrespectful and issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for a retraction.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed that Mr. Akandoh accepted the Association’s apology and reiterated his commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the revised collective bargaining agreement aimed at improving conditions of service for nurses and midwives. He also pledged continued support for reforms in the health sector as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The Ministry further appealed for calm, assuring stakeholders and the public that government remains committed to addressing systemic challenges in the sector.
This development is expected to ease tensions between healthcare professionals and government, paving the way for a more collaborative effort in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.
