Kennedy Agyapong Is Ghana’s Trump and Berlusconi – Ex-Deputy Finance Minister Backs Him for NPP Flagbearer

Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng has declared his strong support for Kennedy Agyapong in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries, describing him as a bold, business-minded leader capable of transforming Ghana’s economic landscape.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Dr. Ampaabeng emphasized that his endorsement of the former Assin Central MP stems from grassroots sentiment and a deep conviction—not political betrayal.

“This is not about betrayal,” he explained. “It’s based on feedback from the ground. The people who empowered me politically believe Kennedy Agyapong is the one who can deliver, and they are ready to give him their support.”

Drawing comparisons with global political figures, Dr. Ampaabeng likened Agyapong to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi, and Thailand’s Thaksin Shinawatra—businessmen-turned-politicians known for shaking up traditional politics.

“Kennedy is Ghana’s Berlusconi, our Trump, our Thaksin Shinawatra,” he said. “He has what it takes to address Ghana’s biggest challenge—youth unemployment.”

Dr. Ampaabeng argued that Ghana needs a leader with a strong business background who can generate jobs and revive the economy. “This is the right time. The country needs someone who understands job creation from a practical perspective, and people in business have proven they can deliver results. Kennedy is the right man for the job.”

He also made it clear that his support for Agyapong is not a rejection of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is expected to contest again. “This has nothing to do with betraying Dr. Bawumia,” he said. “It’s about who can win power and govern effectively.”

With the NPP presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026, Dr. Ampaabeng becomes one of the most prominent former officials to publicly back Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy—signaling a growing wave of support behind the outspoken politician.
