I Took Over a $200m Debt - DVLA Boss

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has disclosed that he inherited a massive debt burden when he assumed office.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, August 19, Mr. Kotey revealed that the Authority’s accounts were heavily in deficit at the time.

“I inherited debt, which I made public. In our dollar account, we were owing close to $200 million. In our cedi account, we were owing about GH¢300 million,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Kotey highlighted significant improvements under his leadership, pointing to a surge in revenue collection.

“I don’t want to blow my horns, but I have been able to make a lot of changes. In the first quarter of 2025, revenue increased by 57% compared to previous years,” he stated.

Mr. Kotey credited the progress to reforms aimed at improving efficiency and financial discipline within the DVLA, noting that the Authority is on course to restore financial stability.
