Kwabena Agyepong Declares 2026 Presidential Bid, Says He’s NPP’s Best Hope for 2028

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has formally declared his intention to contest the party’s 2026 presidential primaries, positioning himself as the candidate who can unify the party and lead it to victory in the 2028 general elections.

His announcement came shortly after the NPP opened nominations on Tuesday, July 29, officially launching the race to select a new flagbearer.

At a brief declaration ceremony, Ing. Agyepong presented himself as a symbol of integrity and unity, urging delegates to rise above inducements and reject what he called the growing influence of money in internal party politics.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, to ordinary citizens — not to the closed circles of self-satisfied elites. Let us not burden our party with choices that bring division and necessitate endless reconciliation. With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory,” he said. “We need clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart to lead both our party and our nation. I am ready to rebuild, to restore, and to renew hope — not just for our party, but for every Ghanaian.”

Agyepong also extended an olive branch to former presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen, urging him to rejoin the NPP, stressing that the party was founded on values of “sacrifice, not privilege.”

The declaration event was attended by several party figures, including former NPP Members of Parliament such as Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye.

Meanwhile, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced that nominations for the presidential primaries will close on August 28, with the internal elections slated for January 31, 2026. Aspiring candidates must pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHS100,000.

During the event, Mr. Kodua also took the opportunity to caution the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against politicising the ongoing chieftaincy tensions in Bawku, rejecting suggestions that the NPP was complicit in the resurgence of violence ahead of the 2024 elections.
