Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, CEO of the Minerals Development Fund and National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stirred controversy after defending the physical assault on former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.
The incident occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station, where Koomson and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, were reportedly attacked by unidentified men amid chaotic scenes during the election rerun across 19 polling stations.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, Dr. Bissiw suggested that Koomson’s history of alleged electoral violence made the attack unsurprising.
“What didn’t Hawa Koomson do? What I’m trying to say is that violence begets violence. If you live by the sword, you’ll die by the sword,” she said.
Dr. Bissiw went further, recalling an earlier incident she claims involved Koomson leading an assault against her at a polling station in Ayawaso West Wuogon.
“I was beaten because she led thugs to come and beat me up. Has she forgotten?” she recounted.
Although she distanced the NDC from the latest incident, Dr. Bissiw speculated that the attack may have been orchestrated from within the NPP itself.
“Nobody sent anyone to go and beat her. As far as I am concerned, it may even be an internal something that they visited on her,” she claimed.
Despite her remarks, Dr. Bissiw emphasized that the NDC remains committed to peaceful elections.
“This is very peaceful. We are taking the day, and we do not have any need to destroy the elections because we are winning,” she asserted.
The Electoral Commission organized the Ablekuma North rerun to resolve lingering disputes from the December 2024 general elections and restore representation to the constituency.
