Chaos Erupts During Ablekuma North Rerun as Hawa Koomson Reportedly Assaulted

Tensions flared at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, within the Ablekuma North constituency, as violence marred the rerun of parliamentary elections.

The situation turned chaotic when a group of unidentified men—described by eyewitnesses as heavily built “macho men”—stormed the polling station in a pickup truck flanked by motorbikes. Their sudden arrival caused widespread panic among voters, election officials, and security personnel.

According to multiple accounts, the assailants overwhelmed the security presence and physically attacked several political figures, including former Member of Parliament and ex-Minister for Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson. Disturbing video evidence circulating online allegedly shows her being shoved to the ground and stomped in the chest and groin before police intervened.

Other individuals reportedly injured in the melee include Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate, and a female party agent.

The violence didn’t end there. A JoyNews journalist was slapped and shoved by a thug while covering the incident. Later reports confirmed that a GHOne TV journalist was also assaulted, this time by a police officer who repeatedly slapped him. The officer involved has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for disciplinary action.

Despite additional security reinforcements, order could not be immediately restored, forcing election officials to temporarily suspend voting at several polling centers.

The Electoral Commission (EC) had scheduled the rerun in 19 polling stations following unresolved issues from the December 7, 2024 general elections. In the wake of the violence, the EC is now facing renewed scrutiny over its preparedness and ability to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

While the motive behind the attacks remains unknown, both the EC and the police have launched investigations. Civil society groups and election observers have called for urgent accountability and swift action to prevent further escalation.
