A heartbreaking incident has occurred at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, where a nursing mother lost one of her newborn twins less than 24 hours after delivery. The tragedy unfolded amidst the nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
According to Citi News, the twins were transferred from the lying-in ward to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) shortly after birth and placed in an incubator. Sadly, one of the babies died, reportedly due to delayed medical attention.
Although the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, sources indicate that the healthcare worker assigned to the NICU arrived late, causing a critical delay in care.
The incident has sparked fear and frustration among other mothers at the hospital, who believe the ongoing strike contributed to the loss.
“There were no nurses available. By the time someone arrived to help, it was too late to save the baby,” one distressed mother told Citi News.
Another nursing mother added, “We are really suffering because of this strike. Our babies are at risk. We are pleading with the government to meet the nurses' demands. If nothing is done, more innocent lives may be lost.”
The striking nurses are demanding better working conditions and improved salaries, but negotiations with the government remain unresolved. Many affected families are now urging both parties to reach a swift compromise to prevent further tragedies.
