The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Wontumi has announced at an extraordinary meeting of the party’s top regional leadership that sitting NPP members of parliament in the region will not be contested, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.
This comes after the governing NPP set this month, January2020 to conduct parliamentary primaries for constituencies it has sitting Members of Parliament as disclosed by the Deputy General Secretary of the party, Nii Laryea Squi last year.
Interested persons will pick nomination forms at a cost of GHC2,000 while the filing fee is pegged at GHC20,000 while aspirants who will be contesting the sitting Members of Parliament will also be required to pay an additional development levy of GHC30,000.
It, however, appears the party’s Ashanti Regional Chair has his own plans. According to him, not only will he ensure all sitting NPP MPs go unopposed, but also orphan constituencies must re-present the NPP candidates who lost in 2016 in order to maximize the chances of the NPP either closing the gap from the last election or winning in 2020.
Insiders say Wontumi’s is motivated by MP for Suame, Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu and controversial MP for Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi to go on the path he has chosen.
Wontumi has also bragged that as regional Chairman, the party’s constitution allows him to unilaterally disqualify members who are not in his good books from contesting, including Manaf Ibrahim from Asawase constituency who is currently in court.
Where the unopposed plan fails, Wontumi hopes to persuade the national executives to back their sinister agenda as they intend to frustrate qualified persons who are determined to contest some sitting MPs in the region.
