Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Announces Bid for NPP General Secretary Post

Former Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest the position of General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The announcement, made on her Facebook page on Monday, October 20—coinciding with her birthday—was accompanied by a passionate appeal to party members to unite behind her vision of rebuilding and revitalising the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“Dearest Patriots, I come to you on this day of my birth with genuine regards. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base. We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition has demonstrated over the years… we will thrive,” she wrote.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful encouraged party members to remain optimistic, describing the party’s current challenges as an opportunity for self-reflection and renewal.

“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt, and in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno… we will rise. It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready,” she added.

The former Ablekuma West MP also took aim at the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a “caretaker government” that ascended to power through “deceit and unfulfilled promises.”

“This caretaker NDC government is there not just because they are preferred; they are there because they lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises, and caused belief in us to wane. But we will revive it,” she stated.

Pledging to restore unity and confidence within the NPP from the grassroots to the national level, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said this would be essential to reclaiming power in 2028.

“From the polling stations, through to the electoral areas, constituencies, and regions to the top, we will restore confidence in our party and unity amongst ourselves. That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government,” she noted.

Describing herself as “nurtured, proven, and prepared,” she said she was ready to lead the party’s reorganisation and renewal process.

“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you, the fighter you have always known… to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government,” she declared.

“I come to you in all humility, to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful concluded her message with a rallying call for solidarity and faith in the NPP’s mission.

“Patriots, join me. Let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
