TEWU Demands 50% Increase in Base Pay Ahead of Salary Negotiations

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC-Ghana has called for a 50 percent increase in base pay as it prepares to engage the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations in upcoming salary negotiations.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, October 9, TEWU’s National Chairperson, Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, said the union expects a substantial improvement in workers’ conditions, emphasizing that the rising cost of living has made wage adjustments unavoidable.

“We are selling our labour, and as you know, whenever the economic situation changes, our conditions of service must also change. So we are going into these negotiations expecting an improvement in the base pay,” she stated.

“I think the minimum should be 50%. Even if the government gives us 100%, we’ll say thank you, Mr. Government or Mr. President, and walk away.”

Responding to the demand, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, acknowledged the union’s concerns and assured that the government would carefully review the proposal.

He expressed optimism that the outcome of the negotiations would strike a fair balance between the welfare of workers and the state’s financial capacity, ensuring sustainable compensation across the public sector.
