NPP Flagbearer Race: “To Save the Ship, Remove the Jonah” – Former MP Tells Delegates

Former Anyaa Sowutuom MP, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reject former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming flagbearership race if the party hopes to win the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Adomako Kissi, who is a member of Bryan Acheampong’s campaign team, made the remarks during an interview on Channel One TV, drawing a biblical comparison between Dr. Bawumia and Jonah, who had to be thrown overboard to save a sinking ship.

“It’s not about one person. When it happened that Jonah had to be removed from the ship to save it, it was done. Sometimes, you have to remove any ‘Jonah’ who is sinking the ship,” he said.

Reacting to claims that delegates in the Greater Accra Region have already thrown their support behind Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Kissi argued that the former Vice President’s performance in previous elections showed waning confidence in his leadership among party members.

“I didn’t want to go there, but in the last primaries, he underperformed in Greater Accra. Out of 34 constituencies, we won only two in the presidential race. The region is not as responsive to him as it is to Dr. Bryan Acheampong — and that’s not my opinion; it’s the euphoria I’m observing,” he stated.

Dr. Adomako Kissi further noted that the NPP’s disappointing performance in the last election should serve as a signal for renewal within the party. He drew parallels with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which replaced Haruna Iddrisu with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minority Leader to reposition itself strategically.

“The party’s deficit calls for a radical change, and it’s not about personalities. Look at what the NDC did — they realised they needed to win the Central Region, so they replaced Haruna Iddrisu, a colossal figure, with Ato Forson. That’s what decisive leadership looks like,” he said.

Dr. Adomako Kissi maintained that for the NPP to “save the ship” and regain public confidence, delegates must choose a new direction — one he believes Bryan Acheampong represents.
