EOCO places GH¢100,000 bounty on banker wanted over GH¢33 million theft

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has launched a nationwide manhunt for Akwasi Agyemang-Abebrese, a former bank official accused of embezzling more than GH¢33 million from a financial institution in Kumasi.

Authorities have announced a GH¢100,000 cash reward for credible information leading to his arrest.

According to EOCO, Agyemang-Abebrese, who previously served as a Customer Service Manager at the bank (name withheld), is wanted for alleged offences including stealing and money laundering.

Details of the alleged fraud

An internal audit revealed that between November 2023 and February 2025, the suspect orchestrated a sophisticated scheme to siphon funds from the bank’s internal accounts and the KNUST Postgraduate Student Hostel account.

Documents submitted to EOCO indicate that a total of GH¢33,384,494 was diverted into Agyemang-Abebrese’s personal accounts. Of this amount, GH¢4.85 million reportedly came directly from the student hostel’s funds.

Investigations further revealed that while several staff members acted as “inputters,” processing 61 transactions worth GH¢29.7 million, all the transactions were allegedly authorised by Agyemang-Abebrese.

Suspect disappears

The bank first raised alarm in March 2025, after Agyemang-Abebrese vanished. In a letter dated March 7, 2025, management reported that the suspect left the branch “under the pretext of searching for source documents” for suspicious transfers — but never returned. Efforts to reach him failed as his phone was switched off.

EOCO’s appeal to the public

EOCO has urged the public to assist in locating the fugitive, assuring that any information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Informants can contact the EOCO Head Office on Barnes Road, Accra, any regional EOCO office, the nearest police station, or call 0256957742 or 0579709066.

The agency reiterated its commitment to pursuing all individuals involved in financial crimes and ensuring that stolen public and institutional funds are recovered.
