The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce biometric versions of Ghana’s International Driver’s Licence (IDL) and International Vehicle Permit (IVP) in 2026, as part of efforts to enhance global recognition and compliance with international standards.
In a statement shared on the official Facebook page of DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, the Authority explained that the initiative aims to address challenges faced by some Ghanaian drivers abroad, whose existing international licences and permits have occasionally been rejected in certain countries.
Under the new system, the DVLA will issue Biometric International Driver’s Licences and Biometric International Vehicle Permits equipped with advanced security features. Both documents will include a bio-data page designed to meet the full specifications of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

According to the DVLA, the introduction of biometric technology marks a major step toward establishing a modern, secure, and globally verifiable system for Ghanaian motorists who travel or operate vehicles internationally.
The nationwide rollout of the upgraded biometric licences and permits is expected to begin across all DVLA offices in 2026.
