The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has arrested 14 people, including teachers, students, and invigilators, for alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The arrests were made at centres such as Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS.
Confirming the development, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said the number of arrests could increase as investigations progress. He added that results from the affected schools would undergo thorough scrutiny.

Mr. Kapi revealed that the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi was shut down after several mobile phones were confiscated from candidates. The students were later relocated to WAEC’s regional office to continue their exams under strict monitoring.
Other reported incidents included the arrest of two impersonators in Kasoa, both sentenced to six months in prison, while their accomplice received an eight-month sentence. In Kukurantumi, the proprietor of a Christian school and a teacher were apprehended for running a WhatsApp group used to circulate leaked exam questions.
At Abura Dunkwa, an individual identified as Ebenezer Fynn was also arrested for impersonation and is assisting with investigations.
Mr. Kapi stressed WAEC’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the WASSCE and warned that the Council would continue to implement tough measures to curb exam malpractice.
