UTAG-UCC issues 48-hour ultimatum to GTEC over “unlawful” sanctions

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), demanding the withdrawal of recent sanctions imposed on the institution.

The move follows GTEC’s decision to suspend all government-related support and services to UCC and to list the university as “non-existent” on its official portal. According to the Commission, the sanctions were prompted by UCC’s alleged failure to comply with directives regarding the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

Addressing journalists, UTAG-UCC Secretary Dr. Isaac Boabeng described GTEC’s actions as “unlawful, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on the dignity and livelihoods of university staff.” He condemned the withdrawal of government support, warning that any disruption to the payment of salaries would be reckless and criminal.

“Salaries are not privileges that can be whimsically withdrawn. It is unacceptable to deny staff what is rightfully due them. Such an act is unlawful and must be treated with the contempt it deserves,” Dr. Boabeng stated.

He stressed that GTEC must not only reverse the directive but also issue a formal apology by Thursday or Friday. Failure to do so, he warned, would trigger a mass protest.

“If GTEC fails to act, then by Thursday or Friday, we are all marching to Accra. They can come and lock UCC and take the keys to Accra if that is what they want. But GTEC and Professor Okloh must understand that there are laws in this country,” he declared.
