The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted reports suggesting that the validity of the Ghana Card will be reduced from 10 years.
In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the Authority reaffirmed that the card “remains valid for 10 years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed in line with the law.”

The NIA clarified that remarks by its Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, had been misinterpreted. According to the Authority, Mr. Deku did not announce any policy change but merely indicated that future reviews could explore shorter update intervals due to rapid technological advancements.
It stressed that the existing ten-year renewal cycle remains unchanged, noting that the card’s lifespan and expected changes in cardholders’ personal features over that period justify the timeframe.
The Authority urged the public to disregard the misinformation and assured Ghanaians of its commitment to maintaining a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identity system.
