Kennedy Agyapong: ‘If your plan for Ghana begins with IMF, you’ve already failed’

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has taken a swipe at his rivals, insisting that any vision for Ghana that starts with negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is bound to fail.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on September 6, the former Assin Central MP argued that Ghana’s repeated dependence on IMF bailouts reflects weak economic policy and poor leadership.

“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” Agyapong stated.

Outlining his alternative vision, Agyapong pledged to build a self-reliant economy strong enough to render the IMF irrelevant. His remarks, widely seen as a veiled jab at fellow contenders, come in the lead-up to the NPP’s flagbearer election ahead of the 2028 general polls.

Among his key competitors is Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who chairs the Economic Management Team and has overseen Ghana’s ongoing IMF programme.

Agyapong’s campaign message has largely focused on boosting domestic investment, job creation through manufacturing, and strict fiscal discipline to cut down on unsustainable borrowing.
