Residents in parts of the Central Region, particularly the Kwanyako area, have been left without safe water supply following the shutdown of the Kwanyako Headworks by Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
The shutdown was prompted by the breakdown of intake pumps at the treatment plant, caused by heavy siltation from illegal mining activities. Officials revealed that before the disruption, the facility produced and distributed over 25,000 cubic metres of water daily.
Divers contracted to assess the damage advised that the pumps be desilted and the river dredged to restore operations.

However, managers at the Kwanyako Headworks caution that dredging alone will not provide a lasting solution if galamsey operations continue to pollute the water source.
