Gbenyiri Conflict: Man Shot Dead While Charging Phone at Kalba

A middle-aged man has been gunned down by unidentified attackers near Kalba in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.

Police reports indicate that the victim, whose name has not been disclosed, had travelled from his community of Uro—where there is no electricity—to Kalba to charge his mobile phone. While returning, armed men emerged from the bush and shot him off his motorcycle. He died instantly.

His body has been deposited at the St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo.

Local stakeholders suspect the killing is linked to the long-standing Gbenyiri conflict, which has already claimed dozens of lives, destroyed property, and displaced over 50,000 residents. The latest incident comes despite the deployment of 400 police personnel to the area.

The conflict flared up again on August 23 following a land dispute between a Gbenyiri resident and the chief’s son, sparking violent clashes that spread to Kalba and other parts of the district.

Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, together with senior officials from the Armed Forces, Prisons Service, and Immigration Service, recently toured affected communities to assess the security situation.

However, residents remain unconvinced. “With this killing, who do you think will trust the system again? Some of us suspected this would happen because the attackers are still in Kalba. If you dare go there, they will end your life like this farmer. Authorities need to do more than just talk,” one resident lamented.

The latest killing brings the official death toll from the conflict to 32.
