CID Boss Applauds Police for Dismantling Armed Gang Behind Rural Bank Robberies


The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has hailed the bravery and professionalism of police officers who successfully dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate that had been terrorising financial institutions across the country.


At a media briefing on Wednesday, September 24, CID Director Lydia Yaa Donkor said the breakthrough followed months of sustained intelligence-led operations. She praised the courage of officers involved, stressing that their sacrifice reflects the Ghana Police Service’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.


“I want to commend every officer in his or her line of duty. Your dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire us all. To the public, your cooperation remains vital. Together, we can build a safer Ghana where criminals have no place to hide,” she later posted on X.

Gang Dismantled, Weapons Recovered

The gang—responsible for a string of violent robberies targeting rural banks in the Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Western, and Ahafo Regions—has been severely crippled. Ten suspects have been arrested, while three were killed during a gun battle with police. A manhunt is ongoing for others still at large.


Those arrested include:

  • Akwesi Agyei (Cobra)

  • Ibrahim Alhassan

  • Samuel Appiah (Akwesi Mugu)

  • Francis Acquah (Preman)

  • David Obuobi (Wasty)

  • Martin Akansina (One Billion)

  • Nana Yaw Frimpong (Mystical)

  • Kojo Atingawo (Borga)

  • Samuel Akwasi Gyan

  • Stephen Sey


Three deceased suspects were identified as Kwaku Peprah (X5), Boozin, and an unidentified associate. Two others—Kwabena Owusu Ansah and Albert—remain on the run.


Police recovered a cache of weapons and other items during the operation, including:

  • Three (3) AK-47 rifles

  • Seven (7) pump-action guns with 96 rounds of ammunition

  • One (1) single-barrel gun with one AAA round

  • Four (4) pistols and 44 rounds of ammunition

  • Cash: GH¢18,845, US$104, 190 Liberian dollars, ₦5,800, CFA31,000, plus assorted Ghanaian coins

  • Six (6) vehicles and four (4) motorbikes

  • Assorted mobile phones, jewellery, and valuables


Officers Promoted for Bravery

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, lauded the officers and members of the public whose support and intelligence proved instrumental. In recognition of their efforts, he approved promotions for 12 officers, including:


  • Three (3) Chief Inspectors granted direct entry to the Police Academy for commissioning into the senior officer corps

  • Three (3) Inspectors promoted to Chief Inspectors

  • Two (2) Sergeants promoted to Inspectors

  • One (1) Corporal promoted to Sergeant

  • Three (3) Constables promoted to Lance Corporals


Continued Commitment

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it will intensify efforts to track down remaining fugitives while sustaining measures to protect lives and property nationwide.
