A Kumasi-based broadcaster with Wontumi FM, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, has been released on bail after spending two weeks in police custody. He was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with one count of offensive conduct for allegedly publishing false news intended to cause fear and panic.
The court granted him bail set at GH₵100,000 with two sureties, both required to be civil servants. His legal team is currently working to satisfy the bail conditions. Asare is expected to return to court on September 1, 2025.
The charge relates to a statement he made on his programme, in which he alleged that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
Prosecutors had opposed the bail application, citing ongoing investigations. However, Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah ruled that there was no justification to deny bail, referencing a previous case in which an individual was remanded for making derogatory remarks about then-President Akufo-Addo.
