A 38-year-old unemployed man, Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe, has been sentenced to six years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for robbing a resident of Nungua at machete point and making away with an Itel mobile phone worth GH¢350.
Vordzorgbe, who slashed his victim with a machete during the robbery, pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery but was found guilty after a full trial presided over by Judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah.
Incident Details
According to Chief Inspector John Gohoho, who led the prosecution, the incident occurred on November 11, 2022. The victim, a Nigerian national from Delta State residing at Nungua Cocoa Beach, had gone to a popular joint at Spintex to socialise with friends. He left around 3:00 a.m. the following morning.
Vordzorgbe spotted the victim from a distance and followed him to a station. He then confronted him and demanded his belongings. When the victim resisted, the convict drew a machete and inflicted a cut on the victim’s left hand, forcing him to surrender his phone.
The victim later reported the incident to the Nungua Police and was given a medical form for treatment.
That same evening, around 7:00 p.m., the victim received information that someone matching the attacker’s description was seen attempting to sell the stolen phone at the Nungua Lorry Station. With assistance, the victim went to the location, identified Vordzorgbe, and had him arrested.
A search conducted on the suspect revealed the stolen Itel phone. Vordzorgbe admitted to the robbery in his cautioned statement.
The court subsequently found him guilty and sentenced him to six years in prison.
