I won’t be on the 2028 ballot, free to enforce fiscal discipline – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, declaring that he will not be on the ballot in the 2028 general elections. He argued that his decision strengthens his ability to enforce fiscal discipline and prevent the election-year overspending that has historically destabilized Ghana’s economy.

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of a three-day state visit, President Mahama criticized the recurring practice of incumbent governments breaching fiscal safeguards to gain political advantage ahead of elections.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he assured, adding that his administration is determined to avoid the cycle of excessive election-year spending.

He also pointed to the economic progress made since his return to office in 2024, including sharp declines in inflation and interest rates and a marked appreciation of the Ghana cedi.

Mahama’s remarks directly counter claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he intends to seek a third term after his current and final tenure.

The discussions with the Singaporean President centered on deepening economic cooperation and attracting investment between the two nations.
