Heavy Security May Discourage Voter Turnout in Akwatia By-Election – EWG Warns

Pro-democracy advocacy group, Election Watch Ghana (EWG), has raised concerns over the level of security deployment ahead of the Akwatia Constituency by-election, slated for Tuesday, September 2.

According to the group, while security is essential to safeguard the polls, an excessive presence of armed personnel could intimidate voters and reduce turnout, thereby weakening Ghana’s democratic process.

“While we recognize the need to maintain law and order, we believe that such a heavy-handed approach risks discouraging participation and undermining the credibility of the election,” EWG said in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 26.

The group further observed that violence during by-elections is often incited by inflammatory remarks from politicians rather than by grassroots supporters themselves. It noted that victims of such incidents are frequently targeted by mainstream political actors.

As part of its recommendations, EWG called for strict enforcement of accreditation protocols, proper screening of security personnel, and a ban on unauthorized groups at polling stations.

“By following these measures, we can guarantee a peaceful election that reflects the true will of the people of Akwatia. Elections must be a contest of ideas and a celebration of democracy, not a battlefield,” the statement emphasized.

EWG also urged the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to safeguard the integrity and transparency of the process.

“We call for a renewed commitment to the principles of democracy by ensuring that elections are free, fair, and credible. The Akwatia by-election should mark a turning point in Ghana’s electoral history,” the group concluded.
