The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has introduced a temporary bonus scheme for licensed miners in a bid to curb gold smuggling and sustain the sector.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 27, GoldBod announced that miners who sell through official channels will now receive an extra GH¢832 per pound of gold. This raises their earnings from GH¢8,868 to GH¢9,700 per pound.
Explaining the decision, the Board said the measure is meant to cushion miners against recent market pressures. “This initiative responds to legitimate concerns raised by licensed miners over the sharp decline in local gold prices in recent months, driven largely by the strengthening of the Ghana cedi,” the statement noted.Read Also: Typhoid Outbreak Claims Lives of Dambai Chief and Former MCE – Oti Regional Minister
GoldBod emphasized the crucial role licensed miners play in boosting national gold output and shoring up foreign reserves, stressing that they should not bear losses resulting from the very economic stability they have helped to achieve.
“The special bonus ensures that licensed miners, who have been central to the country’s increased gold production and foreign exchange earnings, are not unfairly disadvantaged by the appreciation of the cedi,” it added.
The Board assured that resources and directives have already been provided to licensed gold traders across the country to guarantee prompt payment of the bonus to all eligible miners.
