Electrochem Ghana Workers Protest Contract Terminations in Ada

Dozens of workers of Electrochem Ghana Limited in Ada staged a protest on Monday, August 18, 2025, over what they described as unfair dismissal by the salt-mining company. The demonstration followed the termination of their contracts last Friday, August 15, by the McDan Group subsidiary.

The workers, many of whom gathered at the company’s site, accused management of ending their employment without prior notice or adherence to proper procedure. Their frustration temporarily disrupted some operations at the concession.

“We were dismissed without any notice, which is against due process,” one worker told reporters. “Management must explain why our contracts were terminated.” Others echoed similar concerns, demanding transparency and accountability from the company.

Electrochem Ghana, a key player in Ghana’s salt industry, operates a 41,000-acre concession at the Ada Songor Lagoon and has so far invested over $88 million in the project. With dozens of workers affected, residents fear the layoffs could have wider economic consequences for the community.

Labour experts note that Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), requires clear documentation and notice—or payment in lieu of notice—before termination of contracts. The workers’ claims suggest possible breaches of these provisions.

As of press time, Electrochem Ghana had not issued an official response to the protest or provided reasons for the mass termination. Security personnel were deployed to maintain order during the demonstration, which remained peaceful.
