President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and allocations for political appointees in a bold move to reduce public expenditure.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, July 15, was detailed in an official statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. According to the statement, the directive forms part of the government’s broader austerity strategy aimed at addressing economic challenges and realigning spending priorities.
“The President believes that leadership must share in the sacrifices it is asking of citizens,” the release emphasized, underscoring Mahama’s commitment to setting an example through responsible leadership.
This latest measure adds to a growing list of cost-cutting initiatives under the Mahama administration. Previous steps include reducing the number of ministerial and presidential staff appointments and cancelling satellite television subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other state agencies.

The decision also comes on the eve of a new GHS1.00 levy on every litre of fuel purchased at fuel stations nationwide. The levy, according to government officials, is intended to provide the Ministry of Energy with funding to ensure stable fuel supply for power generation.
By scrapping the fuel perks of political officeholders, the Mahama government hopes to demonstrate its seriousness in managing the nation's finances amid ongoing economic pressures.
