GRNMA Suspends Planned Strike Following Promising Talks with Government

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called off its planned industrial action after reaching a positive understanding with government representatives during a crucial meeting held on Monday, July 15, 2025.

President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, announced that the discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ministry of Finance led to assurances that addressed key concerns raised by the association.

One of the major outcomes of the meeting was the government's agreement to resolve the long-standing issue of fuel allowances. According to Madam Ofori-Ampofo, the Ministry of Finance confirmed that provisions for these allowances would be included in the upcoming mid-year budget review, with the payments to be based on standard government-approved rates.

Regarding the GRNMA’s request for an 8% adjustment to the basic salary, she indicated that while the Ministry acknowledged the urgency of the matter, it requested more time to implement the changes.

The association also noted progress on several other outstanding issues outlined in its collective agreement. Madam Ofori-Ampofo stated that government had committed to reviewing these matters as part of the budget review process.

Encouraged by the outcomes of the meeting and the government’s willingness to engage further, the GRNMA leadership expressed optimism about continued dialogue and improvement in conditions of service. As a result, the association has decided not to proceed with any strike action at this time.

The decision comes after GRNMA had earlier threatened to embark on industrial action over delays in addressing critical welfare concerns, prompting the government to step in for urgent negotiations.
