Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Three Schoolchildren and Taxi Driver Near Winneba Junction

A devastating accident on the Winneba–Cape Coast highway has claimed the lives of four people, including three schoolchildren and a taxi driver. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, just past the Winneba Junction, when a Toyota RAV4, with registration number GN 5505-18, reportedly attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver and collided head-on with a Hyundai Jet taxi registered CR 748-20.

The taxi was carrying seven pupils from Winneba to Apam. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to the immediate death of the taxi driver at the scene. Emergency responders quickly transported all seven children and an additional passenger to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for urgent care.

Unfortunately, three of the pupils, who were in critical condition, succumbed to their injuries on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment. The children were identified as students from St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School, both based in Winneba.

Winneba Municipal Fire Commander, DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku, confirmed the details and emphasized that preliminary findings indicate human error as a major contributing factor. “About 70 percent of road accidents in Ghana stem from human-related causes,” he stated. Commander Adu-Roku appealed to motorists to observe road safety measures and exercise greater caution to prevent such heartbreaking losses.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road traffic regulations.
