Parliament’s Appointments Committee has officially commenced the vetting process for seven individuals nominated by President John Dramani Mahama for appointment to the Supreme Court.
The nominees are Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janpere Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Ameleboba.
Their nomination was made in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint judges to the Supreme Court in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.
Leading the vetting session is Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a current Court of Appeal judge, who is reportedly the longest-serving judge in Ghana’s judiciary. Justice Dzamefe gained national prominence in 2012 when he was appointed by President Mahama as the sole commissioner for the Commission of Inquiry that investigated Ghana’s performance and management during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The vetting process will assess the qualifications, experience, and overall suitability of the nominees to serve on the nation’s highest court.
